Heritage Tourists:Start

Tourists? - Yes. Heritage tourists? - Probably.

What is a "heritage tourist"? Honestly? We don't know.

There is no official definition for "heritage tourists" - or any other demand segment or target group in tourism (as in most other service industries). However, we can get closer to an answer by looking at market research data dealing with aspects that might be forming a "heritage tourist", e.g. interest in cultural heritage, nature, culture or the environment. That way, we also get closer to the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) heritage tourist.

What's in it?

We report on three demand segments.

  1. A profile on BSR Heritage Tourists in EU, describing details of those EU inhabitants who went on a holiday trip 2011 into or within the Baltic Sea Region (14% of EU inhabitants or 57 million)
  2. A profile on BSR Nature Tourists, describing details of those EU inhabitants who went on a holiday trip 2011 into or within the Baltic Sea Region and who report "nature" to be a major motivation for going on holidays in 2011 (23% of BSR Heritage Tourists in EU or 13 million).
  3. A profile on BSR Culture/Religion Tourists, describing details of those EU inhabitants who went on a holiday trip 2011 into or within the Baltic Sea Region and who report "culture/religion" to be a major motivation for for going on holidays in 2011 (16% of BSR Heritage Tourists in EU or 9 million).

How is it organized?

Usually (exceptions are possible), the profile starts on sociodemografic information, followed by data on holiday travel behaviour 2011 and holiday planning information.

Which data sources are available?

At the moment, we use data from the 2012 Flash Eurobarometer (#334, to be precise). It reports on a "Survey on the attitudes of Europeans towards tourism" by TNS Political & Social and contains data from all European Union countries.

Are there benchark reports available?

No, in this case we do not offer benchmark reports (as opposed to the three other sections of BASTIS' wiki). The reason is that there are neither time series nor other information suitable for comparison reports.

Is there any historic data on heritage tourists?

Yes, we have analysed the heritage tourists with interest in the BSR based on the 2010 Flash Eurobarometer (#291), "Survey on the attitudes of Europeans towards tourism". Unfortunatly the questionnaire has changed quite a lot in the meantime and the results of 2012 and 2010 are not comparable. You can find the 2010 results here.
