About the Heritage Site

  • Country: Northern Germany (Schleswig Holstein)
  • Location: Close to the city of Schleswig at the Schlei Fjord, about 40km from the Baltic Sea coast
  • Type of location: History and archaeology museum about the Vikings at the historical site of the Viking town of Hedeby
  • Experience offered: The exhibition builds on the finds of archeologic excavations from this site to provide a comprehensive picture of current knowledge of the Vikings. The settlement, its topography and fortifications can be seen in reconstructions and models. Archaeological finds related to topics such as home and living, food, clothing and jewellery give an idea of what everyday life was like. Further topics are the pagan and Christian religions, burial customs, rune stones and runic script. The exhibition focuses on commercial and domestic crafts, as well as trading and the urban development of Hedeby and the nearby town of Schleswig. In the ship hall, a royal longship salvaged from the harbour is on display. There are regular showings of films about the excavations and the world of the Vikings in the museum cinema.
