About the Heritage Site

  • Country: Latvia
  • Location: The castle is situated in Turaida, Vidzeme region of Latvia, on the opposite bank of the Gauja River from Sigulda. About 50 km north-east of Riga.
  • Type of location: The Castle, built in the 13th century became known by the old Liv name of Turaida. The castle's importance as a defensive system began to decline in the 17th century, which lead to its decay. Since 1976 regular archeological escavations were carried out which were followed by restauration and conservation works as a result castle regained a part of its initial shape.
  • Experience offered: Today it is part of the Turaida Museum Reserve and in the rebuilt castle there is an exhibition about the castle building, the Archbishopric of Riga and events in the Turaida castle district connected to Latvian and European history.
